TUNNEL LINER SYSTEM IN ORE PASSES FOR NEW MINE LEVEL – CODELCO TENIENTE

Tunnel Liner system – based on corrugated steel plates allowing from-inside assembly to minimize the impact on the surface – turned to be the ideal solution for the construction of two shafts (vertical tunnels) at Teniente division of Codelco Chile.

Twin tunnels are 75 m long and 3 m diameter wide. Their main objective is to transfer material from the open pit mine to the subterranean deposit.

Material transfer is made by trucks that carry the material to the pits area, and then they unload their hoppers with the entire material to be lately removed and processed at the lower level of the mine.

Tunnel Liner was used as trench shoring to allow a stable excavation and to provide safety for the workers. The building sequence was the following:

– Introducing the probe to the inferior gallery.
– Ascendant excavation of D=1.8 m by raise borer.
– Descending excavation of d=3.3 m by drilling and blasting.
– Installing protection simultaneously with Tunnel Liner.
– Installing definitive armour-plating.

This project is currently being executed and will be finished by September 2012. Tecnovial has performed a first field visit to train personnel at the facility, and a second visit to verify the progress of the work as well as solve any doubts or questions about the building process.
